National Young Writers Month

It almost that time of year again for the Express Media National Young Writers Month. It takes place over the month of June and this year as part of the activities they are hosting a collaborative writing competition.

They are looking for 30 writers aged under 25 from 30 towns around the country who can contribut 100 words each. The final 3000 word story will be published in the September issue of Voiceworks, #90 ‘Copy/Paste’.

If you want in, you will need to email by Monday May 21 at 5pm with your name, age, and address, together with the next 100 words you would add to this story starter by Chris Currie:
It’s only ten minutes later that she’s flying down the highway, rain coming out of the dark straight towards her. There’s that creamy scoop of moon, somehow definitively clear in the corner of the windshield, staying there, statically, even as she rips another sudden swerve. If only the radio worked. If only those noises would stop coming from the boot. That damn voice. There’s another factory up ahead, abandoned but still lit up strangely. It’s nearly too late when she sees the group, huddled in the middle of the road, all their eyes turned towards her. She jams the pedal.

We know that some of you have trouble figuring out where the book you are looking for is on the shelves. Some of you might be unfamiliar with the system we use to file the books. The system is called the Dewey Decimal System, developed by Melvil Dewey in 1876. It makes it easy to find any book and return it to its proper place on the library shelves.

Take a look at the video below for an explanation of the  Dewey Decimal System..

Welcome back everyone.

We hope you had a nice break and if you are celebrating the Lunar New Year this week then happy new year to you also.

Changes are afoot in the secondary library and you will have noticed we have had all new laptops installed over the break to replace the desktop computers. This also means we have two new search terminals.

OPAC search terminals have been under-utilized recently, however, they are now located in a more convenient location and instructions on how to perform a search have been printed out and placed above the terminals.

Other things to look forward to in the near future are TV4education which is going to allow us to stream recorded free to air and Foxtel content directly to your laptops and classrooms. We will also have our e-book platform up and running this term. We are just waiting for the back end of it to be built. Once it is it will allow you to download digital copies of books to any device.

In other news 2012 is the National Year of Reading.  We will be linking together all the great things that are already happening around books, reading and literacy. Look forward to some fun events in the secondary library as we celebrate the 2012 National Year of Reading.
